How much discount do you get by waiting for a cheap ticket at airport?

Is it easy to wait at a big airport for a cheap ticket to come up? What do you have to do? Does it work with Long Haul flights? Is it cheaper than booking your ticket in advance?

There are no standards for that situation, and no fixed percentage discounts. It depends on where you want to go and how many other people also want to go there.
Popular destination will probably have very little, if any, discount, and the planes will all be full anyway. You could end up paying more than just about anyone else. If the place you want to go has a half empty plane headed that way, then you are more likely to get a bigger break on the price, but that is never guaranteed. The airlines have very confusing pricing methods.
When you approach the ticket agent, and get a price for the destination you want, you can always decline to buy it and go to a different airline that offers flights to that same place.
Doing things that way can work if you really don’t care about when you fly – today, tomorrow, the next day…. If you have to be someplace within a specific time, then you will be much better off reserving a ticket ahead of time.
Buying a ticket at the airport will be more expensive, that’s if you can get one on the flight you want.
You’re best to buy your ticket months in advance, the best deal we seem to get is buying it 5- 7 months early.
In addition to the other answers, you might want to try booking last minute. Some airlines will have seats they need to fill and just booking online can save you some money. I wouldn’t bet on going to the airport and finding the flight you want. It’s just safer to do it online…and definitely cheaper. Good luck!

I’ve no experience of booking tickets at the airport, but have heard from others that it’s not as cheap or as easy as you might hope for. If you are ultra-flexible and don’t mind hanging around for hours and hours and are willing to take the risk then go for it. It does depend on how much in demand your destination is though… If high demand, you are unlikely to get a good discount and could pay more.
When booking flights, I’ve always found the cheapest time to book is when the flights first come on the market. Generally this is around 300-330 days before departure but does vary between the airlines.
In the UK I also use Latestdiscountvouchers.co.uk to get news of the latest deals on flights, holidays, shopping, etc, and to make sure I don’t pay more than I should when buying anything online.
