Travel Insurance While Pregnant

Travel Insurance for pregnant women can be a bit tricky and it’s worth doing your homework before you get on a plane to visit aunt Martha in Toronto or for a last minute vacation and reprieve before you’re heavy work of being a mum really begins.
Travel Insurance when pregnant is lumped into a similar category and is often labeled as ”Travel Insurance for Pre-Existing Conditions”.
There is a difference though and if you ask for the fine print around issues of pregnancy your policy will likely reveal some disclaimers. Although travel while pregnant is sometimes considered ‘high risk’ most insurance companies recognize that the long stable period of pregnancy, typically the second trimester, is really not high risk at all.
In fact many a mother will tell you that those three months were the healthiest time of here life. Mum and baby are both in a good and stable place during this time so travel should not be much of an issue. That said one needs to always start with a check-up and ‘clear to travel’ thumbs up from her doctor.
So, travel insurance whilst pregnant is more tricky toward the end of your time – closer to your due date. It’s very common for insurance companies to exclude all coverage for the last nine weeks of your pregnancy. They don’t want to get caught paying the bill for an early arrival!
The bottom line when it comes to travel insurance and pregnancy is make sure you are not taking any unnecessary risks and that you have appropriate coverage should anything go awry. Remember two very important things to do before you book those tickets:
- Check with your Doctor. It’s a good idea to go into the office and have a thorough once over. The peace of mind alone is worth the time.
- Check with your insurance company. Even if you’ve been shopping for the best Travel Insurance Deals stop. Don’t just take a telephone operators word for it. Ask to read the specifics of the policy that will cover you while you are pregnant and traveling.
Enjoy your baby and don’t be afraid to fly and enjoy your life while you’re pregnant. There’s really no good reason to stay on the ground!
