travel tips for airlines?

Question by Becky: travel tips for airlines?
Does anyone have any travel tips for airlines? I’m leaving for FL this week and I’ve been hearing that airlines got more strict lately, so I’m a little nervous. I read online that I should customize my luggage. Any tips on how I can do that? Any other tips I can benefit from will be much appreciated.

If you’re carrying on your bag, you’ll need to make sure that you have no liquids (shampoo, conditioner, perfume, lip gloss, lotion, etc) that is over 3 ounces. Also, all the liquids need to be in a ziplock bag not bigger than a 1-quart size (you can put them all in the same bag). Also, if you’re carrying on your bag, you’ll need to place that ziplock bag (with the liquids in it) in a separate bin when you go through airport security.
Don’t wear a whole lot of layers, unless you want to take them off. Also, don’t wear shoes that are difficult to put on/take off. You’ll need to take off any overcoats, jackets, bulky sweaters, sweatshirts, hoodies, etc. as well as your shoes when you go through security. You’ll also need to take everything out of your pockets, and remove any jewerly, hats, etc.
Final note about carrying things on the plane: because of recent security upgrades, don’t put anything in your overhead bin that you’ll need during the flight (magazines, laptops, books, etc) because you won’t be allowed to access the overhead bin while the flight is in air.
If you aren’t carrying on your bag, be prepared to pay money to check it. Southwest Airlines is free, all other airlines will charge you either or per bag you want to check. Also, the bag must be under the 50lbs weight limit. If you’re checking your bag, you don’t need to worry about the ounces of your liquids (like you will if you’re carrying it on).
What they mean by customizing your luggage is really unrelated to airport security. It’s related to, if you check your bags, how to clearly identify your bags at baggage claim. Since so many bags look alike, it’s a good idea to get some sort of bright colored luggage ID tag, or even tightly tie a bright colored ribbon around the handle of your bag.
Good luck!
